How to clean bird poop off a window is a common question we hear from homeowners.

Bird droppings are much easier to remove when softened with warm water first. Avoid using boiling water, especially on frozen glass in winter, as a sudden temperature change can crack the pane. Warm water is all you need to loosen the mark safely.

Wet it before you touch it, every time.

Dry droppings smear and grind rather than lift off, and scraping them dry can release dust you’d rather not breathe in. Soak the mark with warm water and a splash of washing-up liquid, leave it for a few minutes, then wipe with a soft cloth. If it is really dried on, adding a little white vinegar and allowing more time for it to loosen can help.

Ground floor windows are usually straightforward: soak, wipe, rinse, done. Upstairs windows need the same patience from further away. We often soak the mark with the pole brush, continue cleaning the rest of the property, then return once it has softened. Trying to remove everything immediately is not always the best approach.

We often notice this problem with top-hung windows, especially bathroom windows that are left open for ventilation. When these windows tilt upwards, the glass can become an easy landing surface for birds sitting on nearby gutters or rooflines.

One example we regularly see is a bathroom window with privacy glass that stays open most of the time. The homeowner may not notice the marks from inside because the glass is not clear, but after several weeks, especially during hot weather, the droppings can become much harder to remove.

Our approach is to soak the glass first with pure water, clean the rest of the property, then return once the marks have softened. For stubborn areas, a stiffer brush or specialist tools may be needed to safely remove the build-up.

Properties with solar panels can also attract more bird activity, as pigeons often sit on roof areas and gutters above the windows.

We regularly see this on homes where birds are active around upper windows. In some cases, droppings left on glass for too long during sunny weather can cause permanent discolouration or a cloudy mark that washing alone cannot remove. This is why removing bird mess sooner rather than later can prevent lasting damage to the appearance of the glass.

Never scrape with anything metal, and skip the wire wool. One scratch lasts a lot longer than any stain.

When to Call a Professional

If the marks have been left long enough to discolour the glass, cover several windows, or are in a place where you would need a ladder to reach safely, it is worth calling a professional.
