Do gutter guards need to be cleaned? The simple answer is yes, gutter guards still need cleaning – they reduce maintenance; they don’t eliminate it.

What still happens even with guards fitted

  • Fine debris still gets through. Guards (mesh, brush, foam, or the solid hood type) are designed to stop leaves and larger bits, but pine needles, seeds, grit, and moss spores still work their way in or settle on top of the guard itself.
  • The surface of the guard clogs. Especially with mesh types under trees, leaves and moss form a mat on top that stops water getting into the gutter at all, so it runs straight over the fascia instead.
  • Debris sitting on top holds moisture. Moss and grime on the guard surface stay damp, which is exactly what allows moss and weeds to take root there.

Downpipes and outlets still block. Guards stop material getting in from above, but they don’t stop the odd bit of debris getting in at joints, or material already in the downpipe from a previous season.

How often, realistically

  • Once a year for most houses, ideally out of leaf-fall (so late autumn/early winter after leaves have dropped, or late winter before spring growth).
  • Twice a year if you’re under overhanging trees, near conifers/pines, or in a valley/sheltered spot where debris builds up quickly.
  • A guard extends the gap between cleans – a house that needed clearing two or three times a year without guards might only need it once a year with them – but “once a year” is not “never”.

What a proper check
actually involves

  • Lifting or checking the guard itself for a debris mat on top
  • Checking water is actually flowing into the gutter, not sheeting over the edge (a classic sign of a clogged guard)
  • Flushing downpipes and outlets – Checking the guard is still clipped/seated properly – guards can lift, warp, or sag over time and need refitting

    The honest caveat

    Some installers oversell guards as “never clean your gutters again” – that is not accurate for any guard type on the market. Brush and foam inserts in particular need pulling out and cleaning periodically, since they trap fine debris inside the insert rather than keeping it out.
